在英文裡, Edition, Impression, Issue, Facsimile Reproduction 及 Reprint 的定義相當清楚, 彼此界限非常明顯。

版本 Edition

1. 圖書: 實質上來自同一版型的複本, 不論是凸版、凹版或平版印刷, 均稱這些複本是同一版。All copies produced from essentially the same type image (whether by direct contact or by photographic or other methonds) and issued by the same entity.

2. 電腦檔: All copies embodying essencially the same content and issued by the same entity.

3. 其他資料: All copies produced from the same master copy and issued by the same entity.  A change in the identity of the distributor does not mean a change of edition.

4. 未出版資料: All copies made from essentially the same original production (e.g. the original and carbon copies of a typescript).

複製品 Facsimile Reproduction

其主要目的係模擬原作的外形, 並精確的仿造其內容。

A reproduction simulating the physical appearance of the original in addition to reproducing its content exactly.

刷 Impression

同時印成的相同版本之複本。

All copies of an edition of a book, pamphlet, etc., printed at one time.

印 Issue

某版本的部份複本自成一格, 與其他複本有明顯的區別。通常為修正錯誤或校正內容, 而將新的結果直接入原來的版型, 形成新的「刷」。

Copies of an edition forming a distinct group that are distinguished from other copies of that edition by minor but well-defined variations (e.g., a new impression of a book for which minor revisions have been incorporated into the original type image).

再版 Reprint

1. 由原版型重新印刷的作品, 通常採用照相印刷的方式。其內容或許與原版相同(刷), 或許有若干明確的區別(印)。

   A new printing of an item made from the original type image, commonly by photographic methods. The reprint may reproduce the original exactly (an impression(q.v.)) or it may contain minor but well-defined variations (an issue(q.v.)).

2. 雖然不採用原版型, 但內容卻沒有實質的改變。

   A new edition with substantially unchanged text.

有兩個細目:

版本敘述

應原文照錄有關版本的敘述, 符合英美編目規則第二版附錄B的縮寫及附錄C的數字, 可以適度縮寫。(1.2B1) 倘若是英文的版本敘述, 應以序數(1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.)表達。(C.8A) 其他語言也應比照辦理, 第一版、第二版、第三版等。(1.2B2)

依作品中所載版次敘述著錄；版本名稱如原刊本、補刊本、初刊本 ... 等，均照原書所載著錄之。(1.2.1)

以文字或數字以外的符號當成版本敘述，採用與正題名相同的文字說明之，並置於方括弧內。僅有文字或數字敘述，沒有其他指認版本字樣， 則應加上適當的文字說明或縮寫字。(1.1B2)

無法判定是否為版本敘述時，以伴隨的 edition, issue, version等字為判斷的依據。(1.1B3)

Optional addition.  雖然沒有版本敘述，但確知與前版作品有明顯變動，則以適當的文字描述，當成版本敘述。(1.1B4)

若作品中未載明版本，但能確知其不同於舊版本，如有必要，可簡略描述著錄之。(1.2.1.1)若作品中未載明版本，但能確知其不同於舊版本，如有 必要，可簡略描述著錄之。(1.2.1.2)若作品中雖載明為新版本，但能確知其與舊版本並無不同，則仍以原版本敘述著錄之。(1.2.1.3)

有多種語文的版本敘述時，採用與正題名語文相同者為版本敘述；若有困難，則採用排名在前者。(1.1B5)

若版本敘述不止一種語文時，依正題名所使用之語文著錄，若無正題名所使用語文之版本敘述時， 則依首列者著錄之。其他語文之版本敘述，如有必要，可 以並列形式著錄之。(1.2.1.2)

無共同題名的作品，各有其版本敘述，應分別著錄在所對應的正題名之後，以一個圓點區隔。(1.2B6)(1.2.1.4)

關係版本之著者敘述

以空格斜撇空格引出關係版本之著者敘述。

對特定版本修改增補之著者敘述, 著錄於該版本之後(1.2C1)(1.2.2)。不能確知著者敘述適用全部版本，或沒有版本敘述，該等著者敘述應著錄於題名及著者敘述項，第一版的著者敘 述應著錄於題名及著者敘述項(1.2C2)。

已著錄並列版本敘述，但祗有一個語文的關係版本著者敘述，則著錄在所有版本敘述之後(1.2C3)(1.2.2.1)。

Optional addition. 版本敘述及關係版本之著者敘述有多個語文， 則把著者敘述著錄在相關的版本敘述之後(1.2C4)(1.2.2.2)。

版本敘述祗有一個語文，關係版本之著者敘述有多個語文，則著錄與該作品正題名語文相同的關係版本著者敘述；此原則不適用時，則著錄排名在前者。Optionally, 在版本敘述之後，依序著錄關係版本之著者敘述(1.2C5)(1.2.2.3)。

Statement relating to named revison of an edition

特定版本的修訂版，應在對應的版本敘述及關係版本敘述之後，著錄該等敘述(1.2D1)。

有數種語文時，應照版本敘述的規定辦理(1.2D2)。再刷或沒有變動的修訂版，不需著錄，除非編目單位認為特別重要(1.2D3)。

與特定修訂版有關的著者敘述，著錄於該修訂版敘述之後(1.2E1)。

修訂版版本敘述有多種語文，關係修訂版版本敘述的著者敘述祗有一種語文時，該著者敘述著錄在所有修訂版版本敘述之後(1.2E2)。

Optional addition.  關係修訂版版本敘述的著者敘述有多種語文時, 參照關係版本著者敘述的規定辦理(1.2E3)。
