目錄的功能

1876年, 美國人 Charles Ammi Cutter 主張圖書館目錄應具備的功能:

  1. To enable a person to find a book of which either
    1. the author
    2. the title
    3. the subject
    is known
  2. To show what the library has
    1. by a given author
    2. on a given subject
    3. in a given kind of literature
  3.  To assist in the choice of a book
    1. as to its edition (bibliographically)
    2.  as to its character (literary of topical)

  1. 著者目錄及必要的參照(a及d)
  2. 書名目錄或書名參照(b)
  3. 主題目錄、參照及分類目錄(c及e)
  4. 分類目錄及語言目錄(f)
  5. 版本項及出版項, 配上必要的附註(g)
  6. 附註(f)

中國編目規則的結構
